Weekend speaker builds worth your bench time

Most “must-build” speaker lists start with a $400 pair of woofers and a finish you will never actually spray. This roundup is the opposite: boxes people are cutting on a Saturday and listening to by Sunday night.

First cut: a sealed two-way around an 6–7" midwoofer with a waveguide-friendly tweeter. The win is not the brand name. It is a crossover you can tune with a $40 measurement mic and a Saturday of sweeps. If the midwoofer needs a huge box to hit 35 Hz, skip it — that is a different project.

Second: a cheap-and-cheerful MTM for desktop or nearfield. Two small woofers and a ¾" dome. Keep the baffle narrow. The common failure is stuffing the crossover with “audiophile” film caps before you have a target curve. Start with what’s on the parts card, then swap one part at a time.

Third: an open-bafter or slim dipole if you already own a sub. These are fun, but they punish sloppy EQ. If you do not have a measurement loop, build the sealed two-way first.

None of these are “the last speakers you will ever own.” They are builds that teach you how a box, a driver, and a filter actually interact — which is the only news that matters if you have a bench.
